TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhammadiyah, one of the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia, has announced the date for Eid al-Adha in 2025. Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important holidays in Islam. It is celebrated annually on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijja, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar (Hijri calendar).
Muhammadiyah announced the date on its official website, http://muhammadiyah.or.id, stating, "The Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah has determined that 10 Dhu al-Hijja 1446 H falls on Friday, June 6, 2025."
Muhammadiyah utilized the hisab wujudul hilal method, which determines the start of the Hijri month based on astronomical calculations of the moon and sun's positions, to set the date.
According to Muhammadiyah, three cumulative criteria must be met to mark the start of a new Hijri month: the occurrence of ijtimak (conjunction of the moon and the sun), the conjunction happening before sunset, and the new crescent moon still being above the horizon at sunset. If any of these conditions are not met, the current Hijri month is completed to 30 days.
Muhammadiyah revealed that the ijtimak preceding Dhu al-Hijja this year will occur on May 27, 2025, at 10:04:18 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), leading to their conclusion that the new crescent moon will be visible on the same date.
Based on this determination of the start of the month, Eid al-Adha will be on June 6, 2025. Additionally, Arafah Day, a significant day preceding Eid al-Adha, will be on June 5, 2025, which is the 9th of Dhu al-Hijja 1446 H.
In Indonesia, Hijri calendar dates often have two common versions: the government's and Muhammadiyah's
The date of the Eid al-Adha celebration is designated as a public holiday in Indonesia. According to the official Indonesian Hijri Calendar for 2025 released by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the 1st of Dhu al-Hijja 1446 H is also predicted to fall on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Therefore, Eid al-Adha is also expected to be on June 6, 2025, aligning with Muhammadiyah's announcement.
