Palestinians in Gaza Survive on One Meal Every 2-3 Days Due to Israeli Blockade, Says UNRWA

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are only able to eat once every two to three days due to Israel's tight blockade.

"More than 66,000 children in Gaza are suffering from severe malnutrition," UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna said in an interview with Al-Ghad TV, as reported by Anadolu news agency.

Israel has imposed a complete closure of all crossings into Gaza for food, medicine, and other essential humanitarian aid since March 2.

The Zionist brutality has worsened an already severe and long-standing humanitarian crisis in the territory, according to reports from the government, human rights organizations, and international institutions.

Data from the Gaza Government Media Office recorded that at least 57 Palestinians have died due to starvation since October 2023.

Currently, according to World Bank data, nearly 2.4 million people in Gaza are entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance for survival.

Abu Hasna emphasized that "UNRWA will not be part of the new Israeli plan” for aid distribution in Gaza, as "the plan doesn’t adhere to UN standards at all."

On Sunday night, Israel's Security Cabinet approved a plan to distribute aid to the blockaded territory through private security companies. This plan would only allow 60 aid trucks to enter Gaza each day. Before the intense Israeli military actions that began in October 2023, approximately 500 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza daily to support its population of over 2 million Palestinians.

Consequently, the Israeli plan has been rejected by the UN and numerous international aid organizations as being contrary to humanitarian principles, logistically impractical, and potentially dangerous for Palestinian civilians and humanitarian workers.

The UN Humanitarian Team in Gaza stated on Sunday night that it would "only support a plan that respects the principles of humanity, neutrality, independence and impartiality."

In November of last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also currently facing a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) where it is accused of genocide in its actions against the Gaza Strip.
