TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated to his ministers that they would choose the peacekeeping forces entering Gaza. He made this statement during his government's weekly meeting last weekend.
As reported by Middle East Eye, "We are in control of our security, and we have also made it clear regarding international forces that Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us, and this is how we operate and will continue to operate," Netanyahu said.
"This is, of course, acceptable to the United States as well, as its most senior representatives have expressed in recent days," he added.
U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will not send U.S. troops to Gaza. However, he has reached out to Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Azerbaijan to contribute to the multinational force.
As reported by PBS, the 20-point agreement mediated by Trump earlier this month calls for forces to monitor the ceasefire. However, it does not mention which countries will provide the forces.
It is mentioned that the U.S. will "work with Arab and international partners to develop a temporary International Stabilization Force" that will be stationed in Gaza.
This force will train and support "vetted Palestinian police forces" and will "consult with Jordan and Egypt, who have extensive experience in this field."
Which Military Forces Can Enter Gaza?
Countries considering participation in the international forces in Gaza also want further clarity on their mandate.
Officials from several Arab and Muslim countries said that the focus should be on maintaining peace in Gaza, rather than acting as peacekeepers between Israel and Hamas.
"What is the mandate of security forces inside of Gaza? And we hope that it is peacekeeping, because if it’s peace enforcing, nobody will want to touch that," said King Abdullah II of Jordan in an interview with the BBC.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Hungary, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel opposes the participation of Turkish forces in Gaza. He mentioned this was due to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's hostility towards Israel. Saar said Israel has conveyed its position to U.S. officials.
"Countries that want or are ready to send armed forces should be at least fair to Israel," Saar said. He did not elaborate further.
Erdogan has criticized Israel, especially Netanyahu, since the beginning of the war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, mostly children and women. He accused Israel of genocide and likened Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler.
Times of Israel reported that the Israeli Foreign Minister stated that the International Stabilization Force will consist of troops from Indonesia, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan.
President Prabowo Subianto has expressed willingness at the Gaza Summit to send peacekeeping forces. Azerbaijan has also reportedly agreed, but the presence of Pakistani troops has not been determined.
In addition to these countries, the Malaysian prime minister has expressed a willingness to send troops to Gaza. However, there has been no confirmation from Israel regarding the presence of Malaysian troops there, as reported by Tempo.
