Liverpool's Mohamed Salah Grieves Diogo Jota's Tragic Passing

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah expressed his shock and grief after learning of Diogo Jota’s tragic death in an accident on Thursday, July 3, 2024, in Spain. The incident also claimed the lives of Jota’s brother and Andre Silva.

The accident occurred on the A-52 road near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora, Spain, when their vehicle veered off the road.

Salah was deeply shaken by the news. “I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break,” he wrote on Instagram @mosalah on Friday, July 4.

“Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.”

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot also expressed his sorrow. “My message to them is very clear – you will never walk alone. The players, the staff, the supporters of Liverpool Football Club are all with you and from what I have seen today, the same can be said of the wider family of football,” he said.

Salah extended his condolences to Jota’s family, especially his wife Rute Cardoso and their three children.

“My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten,” Salah said.

Jota’s Journey to Liverpool

Diogo Jota started his professional career at Pacos de Ferreira between 2014 and 2016, scoring 14 goals in 41 appearances. In 2016, he signed with Atletico Madrid but never made an official appearance, spending the 2016–2017 season on loan at FC Porto.

He then joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan, scoring 17 goals in 44 matches and helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League. This led to a permanent move in 2017, and he went on to score 44 goals in 131 appearances across all competitions.

Jota signed with Liverpool on September 19, 2020. Initially seen as a developing talent, he quickly proved himself by scoring seven goals in his first ten matches. Under Jurgen Klopp’s management, Jota became a key part of Liverpool’s attack.

During his five seasons with the club, he won four major trophies: two League Cups, one FA Cup, and the Premier League title. Notably, he scored twice against Arsenal in the 2022 Carabao Cup semifinal and netted the first goal of the Arne Slot era in the win over Ipswich Town in August.

Internationally, Jota represented Portugal and was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League. He scored 14 goals in 29 appearances for the national team. Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, also paid tribute to Jota.
