TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI has quietly launched a dedicated ChatGPT-powered translation tool called ChatGPT Translate. The tool is available on a separate webpage and is designed to challenge the dominance of established translation services such as Google Translate.
OpenAI says that ChatGPT Translate is capable of translating various types of inputs swiftly. "The tool can translate text, voice inputs and images into more than 50 languages in seconds," the company said, as quoted from Engadget, January 15, 2026.
ChatGPT Translate is also said to be capable of adjusting translation results based on context and tone. Users can modify their translations to sound smoother, formal for business needs, child-friendly, or suitable for academic purposes. The tool understands "tone, idioms, and context," OpenAI wrote.
Despite offering context-based features, ChatGPT Translate still has some limitations. The desktop version does not yet support voice input, and the image translation feature is not fully functional due to the lack of an option to upload images.
Support for translating documents, websites, handwritten text, and real-time conversations is also not yet available.
ChatGPT Translate can currently only be accessed through a web page and does not have a dedicated application, so it cannot be used offline. This makes it less ideal for users in areas with limited internet access.
The official launch date of ChatGPT Translate has not been announced. Wayback Machine archives show that a similar page has been appearing since November, indicating that OpenAI may have been testing this tool before making it available to the public.
