Uganda Bans Handshakes After Confirming Ebola Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Ministry of Health in Uganda has implemented a ban on handshaking and other greeting practices that could potentially lead to disease transmission following the confirmation of two cases of Ebola.

According to a report by Nile Post on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as cited by Antara, the Ministry of Health in Uganda continues to monitor the disease dynamics in the country and take necessary measures to prevent its transmission.

Currently, two cases of Ebola have been detected in Uganda, with one of the cases resulting in a fatality. It is known that these two individuals are citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

On Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

According to the latest data from DRC authorities, 131 deaths due to the virus have been recorded in the country. Meanwhile, the previous Ebola outbreak in DRC was declared over in October 2025.
