TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, predicts that the Eid homecoming, or locally known mudik, in 2026 will occur in two waves. Sigit stated that this projection is based on a survey conducted by the National Police Traffic Corps and the Ministry of Transportation.
"The first exodus is likely to occur on March 14 to 15," Sigit said during a coordination meeting for the 2026 Operation Ketupat on Monday, March 2, 2026.
He added that the peak of the second exodus will take place on March 18 and 19, 2026. He warned of the need to regulate crossings between East Java and Bali, as Eid al-Fitr will coincide with the Hindu Day of Silence, or Nyepi.
According to Sigit, the peak of the return flow will also occur in two waves. The first wave is expected on March 24 and 25, while the second will follow on March 28 and 29. He mentioned that the police will carry out extended operations with enhanced routine activities (KRYD) to manage the second peak of the return flow.
A total of 161,000 combined personnel have been deployed for the 2026 Ketupat Operation. Security measures during the operation will be conducted from March 13 to 25, 2026. "There are 161,000 combined personnel, consisting of the National Police, the TNI, related agencies, and all stakeholders," said the National Police Chief.
The National Police have also prepared several traffic engineering measures for the 2026 Eid exodus and return flow. Some of the prepared measures include one-way traffic, contraflow, rest area management, and restrictions on three-axle vehicles.
According to Sigit, traffic engineering strategies remain an effective solution for alleviating potential congestion caused by the increased vehicle volume during the Eid period. "Providing advice and waiving fines, implementing delay systems at crossing areas, and traffic diversion will be the engineering measures we implement," said Sigit.
Moreover, he predicted a turnover of funds from the center to the regions of approximately Rp137 trillion during the 2026 Eid holiday period. "Of course, we hope that the security of the 2026 Operation Ketupat will be fully successful, so that the multiplier effect for the regional economy will have a significant impact," he said.
