Prabowo Recalls Russia's Historic Aid to Indonesia Post-Independence

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto acknowledged Russia’s significant role in Indonesia’s development following its independence. He highlighted that the Soviet Union, with Russia at its core, provided unconditional support during a time when Indonesia was still struggling economically.

"Indonesia had just gained independence and was still very poor. The Soviet Union, in which Russia was a core part, was of great help to us at that time," Prabowo said at the Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg on Thursday, June 19, 2025, as quoted in an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

Prabowo noted that the Indonesian people have not forgotten Russia's assistance. He said that various infrastructure projects across Jakarta and other major cities were the result of that support.

"Until today, not only in our capital city but also in our major cities, there are numerous large buildings, bridges, railways, and large factories built with Russia's assistance," added the former Defense Minister.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin described Indonesia as Russia’s key partner in the Asia-Pacific region, emphasizing the trust and friendship underpinning their bilateral relations. He also underscored the importance of commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties between the two nations, which is being celebrated this year.

Earlier that day, Putin officially welcomed Prabowo at the Konstantinovsky Palace during the Indonesian president's two-day state visit to Russia.

Prabowo was also scheduled to take part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 on Friday. President Putin described the forum as an important event that brings together both political and business leaders.
