TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto will attend the International Labor Day or May Day celebration tomorrow, Thursday, May 1, 2025. State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said that labor unions have sent an invitation to the President to attend the labor event tomorrow.
"The President has decided that, God willing, he will attend the May Day commemoration event," said Prasetyo on Monday, April 30, 2025.
Prasetyo stated that the head of state views laborers as a key element in the nation's economy that cannot be separated. He said Prabowo pays great attention to the government's collaboration with the private sector, employers, and laborers.
"These are three elements that work together in carrying out all efforts and driving our national economy," said Prasetyo.
Prasetyo also mentioned the layoffs happening in many places. He said all parties should coordinate and mitigate if layoffs occur.
"How to handle and fulfill the rights of our worker friends and then as soon as possible how to overcome it by creating new job opportunities," said Prasetyo.
Around 200,000 laborers are expected to attend the May Day commemoration at the National Monument Square on May 1, 2025.
Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) President Said Iqbal mentioned that the workers will come from Jabodetabek and surrounding areas, including Karawang, Purwakarta, Serang, and Cilegon.
Said Iqbal also affirmed that President Prabowo Subianto is likely to attend the event. "It is almost certain that President Prabowo Subianto will attend the May Day celebration," he said during a virtual press conference on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
He added that if Prabowo attends, he will be the second president after Soekarno to join the Labor Day commemoration.
Said Iqbal further noted that, beyond Jakarta, May Day will also be observed in at least 30 provinces, with approximately 1.2 million laborers participating. He emphasized that May Day is not a holiday, but a day to advocate for labor rights.
