PSI Slams Jakarta's Formula E as Budget Waste

6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) opposes the Formula E electric car race scheduled at the Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit on Saturday, June 21, 2025. "The PSI faction remains consistent in rejecting Formula E, and our stance has never changed," said Justin Adrian in a brief message on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Justin stated that since the beginning, the PSI has opposed using a large amount of regional budget (APBD) to hold the race. The Formula E budget, he said, should be allocated to needs that have a more direct impact on Jakarta residents. "Instead of using that large budget for Formula E, we from the PSI faction see that there are still many urgent tasks in Jakarta that directly address the needs of the residents," said the PSI member.

According to him, at present, Jakarta residents are in greater need of decent and affordable housing, improved quality of drinking water services, school building construction, expansion of the Smart Jakarta Card affirmation program for private school students, public transportation development, and job creation, rather than funding Formula E.

"All of this requires consistent financing and should be oriented towards the interests of the residents," said Justin. PSI stated that Jakarta does not need an international event that is not oriented towards the interests of the residents and the fulfillment of their basic rights.

The commitment fee for organizing the Formula E race amounts to 36 million British pounds, equivalent to Rp680 billion. Currently, the Jakarta Provincial Government still owes 5 million pounds sterling. The payment was supposed to be made after the third year of the event, but the election got in the way. As a result, the Formula E event was postponed from 2024 to 2025.

The party with the hand and flower emblem scrutinizes the Report on the Results of the Financial Audit Agency for the Year 2024, which found a shortfall in the payment obligation of the commitment fee amounting to Rp110 billion.

"This indicates that the Formula E project still leaves a significant financial burden for Jakarta," said Francine Widjojo, a PSI council member.

Grace added that in the previous administration, Jakarta allocated a 31 million pound sterling budget through the APBD. Based on the Financial Audit Agency's report for the year 2024, the Provincial Government has not yet paid the outstanding amount of Rp110 billion. PSI questions how PT Jakarta Propertindo will pay off this debt.

"The PSI faction prohibits Jakpro from using the APBD for the organization of Formula E, including regional investment participation from other assignment projects, to cover the shortfall in payment for the race event," said Grace.
