TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah exchange rate is predicted to weaken in the range of Rp16,870 to Rp16,930 per US Dollar on Friday, April 25, 2025. In yesterday's afternoon trading, the rupiah closed weaker by 1 point at Rp16,872.5 per US Dollar.
"The rupiah fluctuated but closed weaker," said Currency Observer Ibrahim Assuaibi in a written statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected Indonesia's economic growth at 4.7 percent in 2025 and 2026. This is down from the January 2025 projection of 5.1 percent. "This projection is stated in the World Economic Outlook report edition of April 2025, which analyzes the impact of the United States' tariff adjustments," said Ibrahim.
Projected figures for Indonesia's economic growth are not significantly different from other developing Asian countries. For example, Malaysia is estimated to experience growth of 4.1 percent in 2025 and 3.8 percent in 2026. Meanwhile, Vietnam is predicted to experience growth of 5.2 percent in 2025 and 4.0 percent in 2026.
Meanwhile, China's economy is predicted to grow by 4 percent in 2025 and 2026. In addition to Indonesia, U.S. reciprocal tariffs also have a global impact. "Global economic growth in 2025 is predicted to decrease to 2.8 percent from the January 2025 projection of 3.3 percent," said Ibrahim.
In addition to the tariff increases, increasing policy uncertainty plays a significant role in economic projections. If it continues, escalating trade tensions and uncertainty will significantly slow economic growth.
Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia predicts Indonesia's economic growth in 2025 to be slightly below the midpoint of 4.7-5.5 percent. Ibrahim says the economy is expected to be good until the first quarter of 2025. "But in the future, these dynamics need to be better anticipated. Therefore, BI is committed to strengthening and improving the mix of monetary and macro-prudential policies," said Ibrahim.
