Scorching Heat in Jakarta, BRIN: Stay Alert for Evening Rainfall

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A researcher from the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, said scorching heat with strong gusts has been affecting Jakarta and Tangerang in the last few days. The temperature could reach 37 degrees Celsius with wind speeds of 41 kilometers per hour.

According to Erma, the maximum temperature reaching 35-38 degrees Celsius during the day is expected to last until the end of October. "This is due to minimal cloud cover over Java Island and southern Indonesia," she said in a statement on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

The formation of two tropical cyclone seeds in the northern region, namely NAKRI in the Philippine Sea and 96W in the Pacific Ocean near northern Papua, has caused a shift in convective cloud concentration towards the northern equatorial region. "As a result, the southern equatorial region has minimal clouds, especially in the mornings until midday," she explained.

But the imbalance of heat between coastal and mountainous areas, as well as between the sea and land, has generated local winds that cause strong gusts. This, however, is not directly related to convective cloud formation or rainfall.

Erma also explained that rain could still fall in the afternoon and evening due to thermal and local convection effects, especially in the central and eastern parts of Java. She urged the residents to be vigilant of sudden weather changes, from extreme heat to rain accompanied by gusts. "During midday, apply sunscreen for protection, but stay alert for nightly rain," she added.
