Sega's Virtua Fighter 6 Latest Feature: The Dynamic Damage Accumulation Mechanism

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The latest installment of Virtua Fighter, introduced at The Game Awards 2024, will feature a new combat scheme. Ryu Ga Gotoku or RGG Studio, a game developer under the umbrella of SEGA, explained the development directly through a nearly 50-minute video on its official YouTube channel on September 25.

The arrival of Virtua Fighter 6 has sparked enthusiasm among versus game fans or one-on-one combat. This series continues the title released in 2006, which was about 18 years ago.

Citing Game Reactor, a day after RGG's video release, Virtua Fighter 6 will feature two game modes. First, the normal mode, where players must win two out of three rounds through classic knockout (KO) or ring-out rules.

The new mode is called uprising. RGG Studio only mentioned that this mode offers dynamic momentum changes. Although not significantly detailed yet, the introduction of a new way to play in this fighting game is significant.

An RGG Studio representative revealed that they are developing a new system called Break and Rush. This innovative system, according to the video explanation, introduces a dynamic damage accumulation mechanism. When a character's body part is repeatedly hit, the damage will accumulate until it eventually allows a break attack.

Once the break attack lands successfully, the attacker will gain strategic advantage and open up new opportunities. "This 'broken' status will carry over to the next round, creating a layer of tactics that adds depth and tension to each match," explained RGG.

Overall, it is clear that the game's development is far from complete. However, RGG Studio is sharing information gradually. The management will introduce all Virtua Fighter 6 characters gradually next year.

New Installment of an Old Franchise

Several Virtua Fighter games were released after 2006. However, these series were just repetitions of Virtua Fighter 5 with minor updates to fit the console advancements. So far, RGG Studio has never changed the gameplay flow of the series. The new overhaul is implemented in Virtua Fighter 6.

From leaked information, the protagonist of Virtua Fighter, Akira Yuki, will receive a new appearance as a marker of the transition to the newest series. He will not just wear a Gi-traditional karate uniform-in plain color like in the previous games. The new title will also introduce a new fighter named Stella. However, RGG Studio will still maintain iconic faces like Wolf Hawkfield and Pai Chan.

Before announcing the development of Virtua Fighter 6, SEGA only added a few elements to this series to fit the latest consoles. The game producer is preparing Virtua Fighter 5 REVO for Steam, to be played on PC. This product is still similar to Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown previously launched for PlayStation 4 (PS4). The updates provided include netcode rollback, as well as 4K graphics at 60 frames per second.
