TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It was neither a speech nor a question-and-answer session. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin opened a meeting with senior figures of the Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS), who visited the Defense Ministry office in Central Jakarta on Friday morning, October 17, 2025, with a video showcasing Indonesia's military strength. The Defense Minister then presented his ministry's agenda during the one-hour session.
PKS Presidential Chief of Staff Pipin Sopian, who attended the meeting, said that when Sjafrie finished his presentation, PKS Advisory Council Chair Mohamad Sohibul Iman immediately responded. Sohibul cautioned the government against relying on military approaches for stability. "The government must build human security," Pipin said at the PKS Central Executive Board office in South Jakarta, Tuesday, October 21.
As Pipin recounted, Sohibul referenced Nepal's political turmoil in early September, which erupted after widespread public dissatisfaction with the government. The PKS does not want Nepal's experience to spread to Indonesia. Signs of unrest already emerged when massive protests calling for the dissolution of the House of Representatives (DPR) spread across Jakarta and other major cities.
According to Pipin, many officials are worried that large demonstrations against the government could also erupt in Indonesia. "We hope President Prabowo Subianto succeeds in leading the country," said Pipin, conveying Sohibul's message to Sjafrie.
