South Korea Drops Data Theft Charges Against 5 Indonesian Technicians

1 day ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five technicians from Indonesian aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) have been repatriated from South Korea following their exoneration from accusations of unlawfully acquiring sensitive data. These allegations were connected to the ongoing joint development program for the RI-South Korea KF-21 Boramae fighter aircraft.

Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizens' Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the South Korean Prosecutor's Office dropped the charges against the five technicians on May 29, 2025, allowing them to return to Indonesia.

"The Prosecutor's Office did not find any unlawful actions against the regulations related to the case and therefore decided not to proceed with the trial," Judha said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Since the alleged data theft case emerged in January 2024, the five PTDI technicians had undergone investigations by the South Korean police and prosecutor's office and were not permitted to leave the country.

Throughout the legal process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the technicians received continuous consular assistance from the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul. Additionally, PTDI provided legal assistance, basic needs, psychological services, and representatives to ensure their physical and mental well-being during the ordeal.

With the termination of the case, the technicians were able to return to Indonesia on June 4, 2025, in good health. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and PTDI representatives picked up the technicians at the airport and escorted them home so that they could reunite with their families and celebrate Eid al-Adha together," Judha added.

Indonesia and South Korea are collaborating on the development of the 4.5-generation KF-21 Boramae fighter aircraft in South Korea. This joint effort to produce the fighter jet began in 2015 and is targeted for completion by 2026.

Under this collaboration, PTDI is the national industry representative appointed by the Indonesian Government as the offset beneficiary (IIP) for the production of the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet prototype.
