Suspect in Two Minnesota Lawmakers Shooting Apprehended

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vance Luther Boelter, the perpetrator of the shooting of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses in a politically motivated shooting on early Saturday, has been apprehended.

Several sources confirmed to WCCO on Sunday night that Boelter, 57, was apprehended near his home in Green Isle, Sibley County.

Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot at their home in Brooklyn Park. Meanwhile, Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home in Champlin. The Hoffman family has undergone surgery and is receiving treatment.

The manhunt for Boelter lasted over 24 hours, as authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for some residents in the northwest metro area.

Officials said Brooklyn Park police arrived at Hortman's home around 3:30 a.m. and found a vehicle that appeared to be a police SUV with emergency lights on. Boelter then left the house and exchanged gunfire with police officers before fleeing.

At a press conference, officials said he was last seen in Minneapolis, wearing a bright cowboy hat and a dark shirt with light-colored pants. Officials stated that he should be considered "armed and dangerous."

Governor Tim Walz referred to Hortman's death as a "political murder" and ordered the flag to be flown at half-staff to honor her and her husband. Hortman, who served as the Emerita Speaker of the Minnesota House, left behind two children.
