BUSINESS INFO - Tempo is preparing to offer two AI-based services, namely the Awatar chatbot and a massive archive management tool, also powered by artificial intelligence, dubbed Atlas.
“These two AI services greatly facilitate institutions and companies in serving their customers and managing their data and information centers,” said Wahyu Dhyatmika, CEO of PT Info Media Digital in Jakarta, on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Both services are the result of Tempo's partnership with Awatar.chat, a tool built by Awatar Innovations Sdn. Bhd., a Malaysia-based AI company founded in 2024.
Awatar, which focuses on providing comprehensive professional AI development services to deliver advanced solutions that drive sustainable growth for businesses. “We are very excited to be collaborating with Tempo, one of the most credible and widely recognized media in Indonesia. We believe Tempo is ready to utilize AI tools, to improve the quality of its journalistic coverage, and together we offer a new product that will help the people,” said Premesh Chandran, co-founder and CEO of Awatar.
The first service by Awatar is a platform that simplifies the creation of AI chatbots for various messaging platforms. With Awatar, users can develop chatbots capable of intelligent, real-time interactions, supported by a customizable knowledge base. “This could drastically change the way businesses interact with audiences,” Wahyu said.
The Awatar chatbot can be trained by adding documents, articles, or books to its knowledge base. Awatar's persona is customizable to match its users' diction and behavior.
Awatar also supports adding content via URL, YouTube, PDF, CSV, and more, and uses vector-based search for accurate information based on context, not just keywords. Awatar can also be embedded on websites or used on instant messaging platforms such as WhatsApp.
Awatar's AI chatbot solution, Wahyu said, can be used in various business sectors. “Awatar helps companies and organizations improve interactions with customers, automate services, and provide information more swiftly and efficiently,” he said.
The second AI service, Atlas, is an acronym for Automated Timeline and Large Archiving System. The artificial intelligence is developed as a processing pipeline for large archives. “Atlas will strengthen the management of our archives and digital assets, making it easier for journalists, researchers, and the public to access the wealth of information owned by Tempo,” said Philipus Parera, Director of Tempo Data Science. Tempo Data Science is a subsidiary of Tempo Digital that handles digital data research and management.
Atlas technology addresses the complexity of data management due to massive archives, data structures that change over time, forgotten articles, and difficulties in migrating from different content management systems (CMS). Atlas works automatically to “clean” and “connect” articles in large archives.
The Atlas process includes programmatically retrieving all articles from the archive, filling in missing fields using the Large Language Model (LLM), grouping similar stories using an algorithm, and generating topics based on story groupings. With Atlas, cleaning up 500,000 articles that would manually take 9.5 years or 1 year with 10 librarians, can now be completed in about 57 days with one 32 GB MacBook Pro M1 Max. “We will also offer Atlas services to businesses and other institutions that constantly store large archives, such as media, universities, government agencies, and others,” said Philipus.
Atlas is expected to expedite the search and research process, overcome manual difficulties in tagging and labeling topics, and enable automatic timeline creation by grouping articles based on mathematical similarities in topics. The result is a clean and intelligent archive that will help Tempo journalists and researchers develop various types of content using generative AI, from newsletters to podcasts.
“Atlas is the right AI tool for a media company like Tempo, which possesses a huge news archive dating back to 1971. Atlas leverages its existing knowledge base, while utilizing the latest reports to generate in-depth content in an instant,” said Eshwaren Manoharen, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Awatar.
“The collaboration with Awatar is part of our innovation as a digital media and proof of Tempo's commitment to continuously adapt to technological advances,” Wahyu said. (*)
