Thousands of Illegal Hikers Removed from Mount Gede-Pangrango

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Center (TNGGP) has forcibly removed 2,658 illegal hikers from Mount Gede-Pangrango, West Java, during the long holiday from May 29 to June 1, 2025. The hikers without official climbing permits were given guidance by officials.

The Head of the Data, Evaluation, Reporting, and Public Relations Working Group of TNGGP, Agus Deni, in Cianjur on Sunday, said that there were locations suspected of being illegal climbing routes. The TNGGP National Park Center stationed officers at these locations 24 hours a day during the long holiday period.

"We did this to prevent the entry of potential hikers without permits and conducted regular patrols on climbing routes during the long holiday. On May 30, 687 people were caught, and on May 31, 1,971 people were caught," he said.

Preventive efforts have resulted in the descent of thousands of hikers who could not show official permits.

Climbing Permits from Basecamps

Based on information obtained, these illegal hikers obtained permits from a base camp (BC). The TNGGP National Park Center affirmed that the BC is not part of the authorized climbing management granted the authority or permit to manage the climbing.

"Hiking Organizers (HO) that have official permits are Basecamp Gepangku, Kobel Adventure, Usaha Sajalur Salam Rimba (USSR), dolan.gedepangrango, and mt_gedepangrango," he said.

Online Climbing Registration

Mount Gede-Pangrango climbing registration is currently done online. Climbing permits are now not issued in the form of a Conservation Area Entry Permit (SIMAKSI) but are replaced with a bar code containing hiker data when registering online.

Before registering, prospective hikers need to prepare several documents such as a health certificate, a statement for hikers under 16 years old or over 60 years old, and accompaniment to ensure safety during the climb. The number of hikers is limited to 600 per day.

Mount Gede-Pangrango is one of the national parks with a tropical mountain rainforest ecosystem that has become a favorite destination for nature tourists from major cities such as Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta Area) and other cities.
