4 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, located in the southeastern part of Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), erupted again on Friday night, June 20, 2025. The eruption at 10:31 p.m. local time produced a 2-kilometer-high ash column from the mountaintop.

The Head of Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, said that the spewed thick ash leaned toward the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters (mm) and lasted for about 2 minutes and 26 seconds.

"The eruption was accompanied by a thunderous boom heard at the monitoring post," said Wafid in an official statement released shortly after the incident.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is currently on high alert, with volcanic activity status at Level IV. Local communities and tourists are advised to stay away within a 7-kilometer radius from the center of the eruption. The southwest-northeast sector, 8 kilometers from the peak, should also be cautious

Authorities also  warn of lava floods in the rivers originating from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki. "Be cautious in the Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Nurabelen, Klatanlo, Hokeng jaya, Boru, and Nawakote areas," said Wafid.

Rise in Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Eruption Activity

The Geological Agency previously stated that the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki increased on June 17-18, 2025, with ash column height ranging from 2 to 10 kilometers from the mountaintop.

An increase in volcanic earthquake activity in Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki started from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Another eruption with a 10-kilometer ash column height occurred again later in the afternoon, followed by seven subsequent overnight eruptions.

"The eruption was explosively directed in all directions, accompanied by flares of incandescent lava and loud rumbling with moderate to strong intensity," said Wafid.

According to him, the volcanic earthquakes were estimated to occur due to the breaking of layers of lava covering the crater formed from the previous eruption period. Seismic data recorded Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupting eight times on June 17-18, 2025.
