TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief of Information Center of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Major General Kristomei Sianturi stated that USS Nimitz, the American aircraft carrier, is currently transiting the Malacca Strait en route to the Indian Ocean. He stated that the warship is permitted to transit without seeking the coastal state's permission.
According to him, the warship sailing between Indonesia and Malaysia is exercising its right to transit passage. "As long as it complies with international navigation regulations and does not pose a threat to the security of the areas it transits," Kristomei said in a written statement on Friday, June 20, 2025.
He mentioned that the regulations allowing foreign ships and warships to transit without permission from the coastal state are stipulated in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Additionally, Kristomei stated that the military will monitor all foreign navigation activities in the national jurisdictional waters. He also mentioned that all relevant TNI units will remain on alert and coordinate to ensure stability and national interests in strategic maritime areas.
"As part of efforts to uphold Indonesia's sovereignty and maritime security," he added.
Prior to this, according to the Marine Vessel Traffic tracking data, the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was reported to have turned off its transponder and ceased transmitting location signals. This occurred amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
The last signal received from the USS Nimitz occurred on June 17, 2025. At that time, the American aircraft carrier was tracked to be located between the waters of Indonesia and Malaysia.
