The Indonesian House of Representatives announced its approval of granting abolition to former Trade Minister in President Jokowi's cabinet, Thomas Trikasih Lembong, also known as Tom Lembong, and amnesty to the General Secretary of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto. The granting of amnesty and abolition is within the authority and was previously proposed by President Prabowo Subianto to the House.
Criminal Law Expert from the University of Indonesia, Chudry Sitompul, considers that the granting of amnesty and abolition is usually related to political motives. "This is to show that Pak Prabowo politically wants to say 'do not add to political unrest'," Chudry said when contacted on Thursday night, July 31, 2025.
2. Prabowo Grants Amnesty to Treason, Presidential Insult Convicts
The proposal for granting amnesty by President Prabowo Subianto to several convicts has been approved by the House of Representatives during a consultation meeting on Thursday, July 31, 2025. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas stated that this amnesty is given to 1,116 convicts from various cases.
Hasto Kristiyanto is one of the convicts who has been pardoned by the head of state. The General Secretary of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) was previously sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison for proven bribery of members of the General Elections Commission in the process of replacing interim members of the House of Representatives involving PDIP cadre Harun Masiku.
