The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. US Government Shutdown: CSIS Reveals Potential Impact on Indonesian Economy
The United States government ceased non-essential operations, or entered a government shutdown, commencing on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. According to Deni Friawan, a Senior Researcher in the Department of Economics at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), this shutdown could affect Indonesia's exports to the US, exacerbate financial market uncertainty, and disrupt ongoing tariff negotiations.
However, Deni assessed that the severity of the effect depends on the shutdown's duration. If the shutdown lasts less than 2-3 weeks, the impact wouldn't be significant. If it lasts longer, such as over a month, as has occurred previously, the impact could be quite significant.
"Considering that the US is one of the world's largest economies, the ripple effects are not only domestic but also affect global economics, including Indonesia," he told Tempo on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
2. US Foreign Policy is Restructuring the World Order
For the first time in its modern history, the US faces a formidable rival — a China that is fast outpacing it.
For years, the US has out-produced and out-innovated other rivals such as Germany, Japan (pre-World War II), and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, the US emerged as the supreme superpower. Not surprisingly, the global system was designated as being ‘unipolar’.
That is no longer the case.
3. Bandung Design Biennale 2025: Exploring the Past, Shaping the Future
A group of designers in Bandung, Indonesia, is holding the Bandung Design Biennale at Laswi Heritage from October 3 to 25, 2025, with the theme Archiving Innovation. In addition to showcasing unique and creative works, the festival also includes discussions and workshops. "This year, we are presenting a wide spectrum of design," said the event's chairman Budi Dwi Rahmady to Tempo on Sunday, October 5, 2025.
The event includes a series of main activities focused on design exploration. The festival kicked off with "BDG Lights '25: Designing the Dark" from October 3-5, 2025. Participants presented light arrangements and various forms of lamps on the outer walls for visitors, and also inside the room, new media installations, a talk show, and music performances. Meanwhile, "Design Archive: Ourchetype x BDB '25" during the exhibition presents an exploration of the role of design as a driving force for civilization through archives, creative processes, and design heritage.
