Toyota Hits 3 Million Car Exports, Aims to Make Indonesia a Regional Research Hub

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) announced that it has exported three million cars to over 100 countries. "Toyota Indonesia has produced 10 million units and exported three million vehicles," said President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Koji Sato, in a press release from the Ministry of Industry on Friday, October 10, 2025.

Koji Sato stated that Toyota will strengthen Indonesia's role as a research and development (R&D) and export center for the global southern or developing countries. Toyota Indonesia is a labor-intensive industry that has cooperated with over 240 local Tier-1 suppliers, as well as over 520 local Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers.

In addition to reducing import dependence, according to Koji Seto, this cooperation is expected to drive the growth of domestic industry self-reliance, including small and medium-sized industries (IKM) as an important part of the national supply chain.

Through this cooperation, Koji Seto stated that Toyota Indonesia's products have reached more than 80 percent local content.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Group's investment in Indonesia has reached Rp 100 trillion. According to Koji Seto, this investment involves more than 360,000 workers in various sectors, including production, the supply chain, distribution, and after-sales services.

Responding to the number of Toyota Indonesia's car exports, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that this achievement is an important milestone, demonstrating the strengthening and adaptability of the domestic industry to global economic dynamics.

"Toyota Indonesia has become one of the main drivers of the national automotive industry with significant contributions to exports and employment," said Agus, in the same press release.

Agus stated that the automotive sector has a double effect on the national economy. In 2024, the gross value added of the motor vehicle industry reached Rp180 trillion.

With a backward linkage of 2.07 and a forward linkage of 2.4, Agus estimates that the automotive industry has an additional impact of Rp804 trillion on the upstream and downstream sectors. "The automotive industry not only produces vehicles, but also drives the supporting industrial ecosystem such as steel, rubber, plastic, metal, and the transportation and logistics sectors," said the Golkar politician.

Agus noted that Toyota Indonesia has nurtured more than 700 supplier companies and employed more than 360,000 workers.

He also hopes that Toyota Indonesia will continue to support the government's commitment to developing environmentally friendly vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.
