TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, November 19, that he will meet with New York Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani on Friday, November 21, at the White House.
As reported by Anadolu, Trump recently wrote on the Truth Social platform, "Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!"
According to CBS News, Trump had previously announced plans for the meeting in Washington earlier this week, but at that time, the date had not been set.
Political Tensions in the U.S.
Mamdani, 34, made history as the first Muslim and South Asian descent to lead the largest city in the United States. He won the general election earlier this month, defeating two main opponents, former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa of the Republican Party. Mamdani's campaign centered on making New York more affordable and improving social services.
During the campaign, Trump repeatedly attacked Mamdani, often referring to him as "communist," and supported Cuomo a day before the vote. Trump also warned several times that he could cut federal funding for New York City if Mamdani were to win. After the election results were announced, Trump said in an interview with Fox News that although he did not want to "make Mamdani successful," he still wanted to "make the city successful."
Mamdani's Response After Winning
Zohran Mamdani also frequently criticized Trump throughout the campaign, including in his victory speech. However, after being elected, he expressed a willingness to work with the federal government.
Previously, Mamdani had emphasized that he was open to speaking with Trump. In an interview with MS NOW on Wednesday night, Mamdani said, "I want to just speak plainly to the president about what it means to actually stand up for New Yorkers and the way in which New Yorkers are struggling to afford this city."
