Trump Delays TikTok Shutdown in US for Third Time

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump will extend the operation of TikTok for the third time. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated last Tuesday, June 17, 2025, that Trump is expected to sign the latest executive order regarding TikTok this week.

The social media application from China has been granted another 90-day extension to be used in the United States. "Working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure," Leavitt argued, as quoted from The Verge report on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

In 2024, the U.S. Congress passed the law prohibiting TikTok unless ByteDance, TikTok's parent company in China, divests its operations in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the legislation issued during President Joe Biden's era.

ByteDance was given nine months for divestment after the ratification in April 2024. Because they did not take the divestment option, the ban was temporarily imposed in early 2025, and more than 170 million TikTok users in the United States experienced a 13-hour blackout of the application.

It was only 13 hours because, immediately after being sworn in as President of the United States in January, Trump guaranteed a 75-day grace period for TikTok. Trump was the first President of the United States to propose banning TikTok in August 2020. The reason was the suspicion of Chinese government intervention in TikTok's data, a popular social media platform in the world--an accusation that has been denied by ByteDance.

Not only once, but Trump gave an additional 90-day opportunity to TikTok afterward. The latest executive order will be issued this week, giving TikTok an additional 90 days to reach an agreement.

Actually, there have been many offers to acquire TikTok in the U.S., from Amazon to MrBeast. Several media outlets reported in early April that a deal had been approved by both old and new investors, and even a deal between the U.S. Government and ByteDance itself. However, the deal fell through again due to the trade war declared by Trump against China.

So, now the investors must wait until mid-September to renegotiate the deal. According to the enacted law, 80 percent of TikTok's U.S. operations must be owned by domestic investors, while ByteDance can still own 20 percent.
