TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump urged negotiators to promptly produce results in the ongoing Gaza peace talks. Writing on the Truth Social platform ahead of the latest round of talks in Egypt on Monday, October 6, Trump stated:
"Time is of the essence, or a massive bloodshed will follow - something that nobody wants to see," he wrote.
According to Sky News, Egypt agreed to host indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Israel's delegation was led by Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, while Hamas was represented by its political bureau chief in exile, Khalil Al-Hayya. The United States envoy, Steve Witkoff, was also scheduled to join the discussions. These talks come two years after a Hamas attack that sparked the current war in Gaza.
Focus on Prisoner and Hostage Exchange
In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that there had been "very positive discussions" with Hamas to free the hostages, end the war in Gaza, and, more importantly, achieve the long-sought peace in the Middle East. He expressed optimism that the first phase of the agreement is expected to be completed this week.
"I am told that the first phase should be completed this week, and I am asking everyone to move fast," he wrote.
According to NBC News, the initial stage of the agreement involves the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the release of 48 hostages still held by Hamas. The Israeli government estimates that about 20 of those hostages are still alive.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope to announce the release of the hostages in the coming days. Meanwhile, Hamas stated last Friday that they are ready to return all hostages, including both those still alive and those who have passed away.
Challenges of the Second Phase
In an interview with NBC, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Hamas has agreed in principle to post-war steps in Gaza. However, he warned that the second phase, which includes disarmament and the dissolution of Hamas forces, will not be easy.
Rubio added, "We'll know very quickly whether Hamas is serious or not by how these technical talks go in terms of the logistics."
Hamas had previously rejected calls for disarmament. A Palestinian official stated that the progress of the negotiations depends on whether Hamas accepts the map of Israel's troop withdrawal proposed by Washington. Trump released the map, which he claims has been approved by Israel.
