UK, Singapore Airlines Suspend Dubai, Doha Flights Amid Middle East Tensions

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airlines are diverting flight paths away from much of Middle Eastern airspace following the United States' attack on Iran's nuclear sites and the ongoing missile war in the region. Data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed no commercial flights passing through that corridor on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

FlightRadar24 confirmed the situation on their social media platform, X, as reported by Independent.co.uk. They stated, "Following U.S. attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, commercial traffic in the region is operating as it has since new airspace restrictions were put into place last week."

Direct tracking data from the website showed no commercial flights over Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Israel. Airlines have opted for alternative routes, either to the north via the Caspian Sea or to the south via Egypt and Saudi Arabia. This diversion is a safety measure, though it incurs higher costs due to increased fuel and crew expenses, as well as longer flight times for both passengers and cargo.

Flights to Dubai and Doha Canceled

British Airways and Singapore Airlines announced on Sunday that they had canceled flights to Dubai and Doha after the U.S. attack on three nuclear locations in Iran the previous night.

"As a result of recent events, we have adjusted our flight schedule to ensure the safety of our customers and crew," the British carrier stated in a press release quoted by Arab News.

Singapore Airlines also canceled two flights between Singapore and Dubai on Sunday, citing security assessments of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

U.S. Attack on Iran

Around 8 PM ET, Saturday, June 21, 2025, President Donald Trump issued a message on his Truth Social website, declaring the attack on three of Iran's nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, "very successful."

"Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated," Trump stated in his brief speech on Saturday night.

Missile and drone attacks in several increasingly conflict-ridden zones worldwide pose high risks to air traffic. Prior to the U.S. attack on Iran, Israel launched an attack on Iran on June 13, leading airlines to suspend flights to destinations in affected countries.

Evacuation of Foreign Nationals

The escalating tension in the Middle East has prompted many countries to evacuate their citizens from Iran. The Japanese Foreign Ministry reported evacuating 21 people, including 16 Japanese nationals, from Iran overland to Azerbaijan. This marks the second such evacuation since Thursday, with further evacuations planned if necessary.

The New Zealand government announced on Sunday that it would dispatch a military transport aircraft, a Hercules, to the Middle East on standby to evacuate New Zealanders from the region. A statement mentioned that government personnel and a C-130J Hercules aircraft would depart Auckland on Monday, with the aircraft expected to take several days to reach the region.
