TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Condé Nast Traveller has released its list of “The Friendliest Cities in the World: 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards,” highlighting ten destinations known for the warmth and hospitality of their residents. This year, Quito, the capital of Ecuador, claimed the top spot.
Hospitality plays a crucial role in shaping travelers’ memories of a city. From Asia to Europe, many destinations captivate not only with their landscapes and cultural richness but also through the genuine warmth of their people, making visitors feel instantly welcome.
Chosen by readers from thousands of cities across continents, Quito stood out as the city that left the warmest impression on travelers, earning it the title of the friendliest city in the world for 2025.
The Allure of Quito
Nestled on the snowy slopes of the Andes Mountains, Quito may not be among the most visited destinations, but its timeless charm continues to enchant travelers. Built on the ruins of the ancient Inca civilization, the city later flourished under Spanish colonial influence.
In 1978, Quito became one of the first sites recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Its historic center showcases a captivating blend of European and indigenous influences, reflected in its churches, monasteries, and picturesque squares.
As the oldest capital in South America, and the only one from the continent to appear on this year’s list, Quito’s magnetic character and extraordinary hospitality have earned it global recognition.
A Harmony of Past and Present
Quito beautifully balances heritage and modernity. “Quito’s Historic Center continues to evolve while holding onto its soul,” said Maria Cecilia Alzamora, vice president of branding and innovation at Metropolitan Touring, as quoted by Forbes.
“What truly makes it special is the way the past and present coexist.”
One example of this harmony is the city’s modern underground metro system, whose gleaming stations are located between two of the most iconic colonial churches in the historic center. Although its construction initially caused congestion, the metro has since become a symbol of progress and pride for local residents.
Other Friendliest Cities
Besides Quito, other destinations included in Condé Nast Traveller’s 2025 Readers’ Choice list are Vienna in Austria, Cape Town in South Africa, Singapore, Florence in Italy, Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, Lisbon in Portugal, Edinburgh in Scotland, and Kyoto in Japan.
