TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tech company WhatsApp is reportedly preparing a new feature that allows users to connect using a username, not just a phone number as has been the case. This step is said to enhance privacy for users and align WhatsApp features with other messaging apps, such as Telegram and Signal.
In the latest beta version on Android, GSM Arena reported that WhatsApp has added a settings menu that allows users to reserve a username before the system is officially released.
As a result, users can secure their desired names before this feature is widely launched. This effort is also intended to ensure fairness, so that early users do not immediately claim popular usernames.
WhatsApp has set some rules for this feature. Usernames cannot start with 'www.', must have at least one letter, and can only use lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.
The presence of the username feature is expected to strengthen user privacy protection, especially for those who are reluctant to share their phone numbers with newly known people.
Until now, WhatsApp has not announced the official launch time for the feature. However, the company is said to have made several preparations, so the full launch is likely to be carried out in the coming months.
