Who Is Ophelia?

Ophelia is the lover of Prince Hamlet in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” who is also the daughter of Polonius and the sister of Laertes.

As a noblewoman, Ophelia is portrayed as an obedient figure navigating her love for Hamlet, all while staying loyal to her father. As tragic as it was, both her father and brother were wary of her romance with Hamlet, fearing his intentions might not be sincere.

Through her conversation with BBC 1, the “Love Story” singer confirmed that a photo of her in a bathtub is indeed a homage to the famous 19th-century John Everett Millais painting of Ophelia.

Taylor Swift later revealed the song's central message: “The hook is someone comes into your life and rescues you from the fate of being driven mad by love,” she said during her appearance on Heart Breakfast.

This theme of salvation is evident in one of the song's bridges, where Swift sings: “No longer drowning and deceived / All because you came for me,” which ended with, “You saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.”
