TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The world is dominated by right-handed people. Given the staggering number of differences between human beings in culture, language, belief, geography, and upbringing, how is handedness a near-universal experience? Why are most people right-handed?
Roughly 90% of humankind reaches for the same hand when picking up a pen, eating a meal, or grabbing a phone. This consistency is not a coincidence. The explanation traces back to evolutionary pressures so ancient they predate our own species, with findings rooted as far back as prehistoric hominins who left their handedness in stone.
The Bias That Predates Humanity
The fossil record is striking. Makers of Oldowan stone tools, dating back 2.6 million years, were predominantly right-handed. Before Homo sapiens even existed, hominins already showed the same bias we carry today. Scratch marks on Neanderthal teeth consistently run left-to-right, the exact angle of a right-handed grip. Some appear on children as young as six, suggesting handedness is biological rather than learned.
What sets humans apart is that this is not just individual preference. In virtually every other species, hand preference splits roughly 50/50 across the population. In humans, 90% tip the same way. Something in our lineage pulled the entire species to one side.
Why Are Most People Right-Handed?
According to Forbes, scientists have proposed four major, non-exclusive hypotheses, all of which likely play a role.
1. Tool Use
Precision work is asymmetric by nature. The dominant hand performs fine tasks, while the other stabilizes. Natural selection favored whoever could do this efficiently, and over millions of years, the right hand became the standard.
2. Language
In most people, language is processed in the brain's left hemisphere, the same hemisphere that controls the right hand. As speech became central to human survival, the left hemisphere became the brain's "chief executive," and the right hand followed.
3. Hierarchical Planning
Complex, sequential behaviors, such as cooking, building, and ritual, require structured neural planning. The left hemisphere appears better equipped for this, again pulling skilled motor control toward the right hand.
4. Social Learning
Humans are deeply imitative. Learning from a right-handed teacher is easier when you share the same dominant hand. In a population already biased rightward, social conformity would reinforce that bias across generations.
Left-Handers Aren’t at a Disadvantage
Left-handers have held steady at roughly 10% of every human population ever studied. The likely reason they persist: in face-to-face competition, being the unexpected minority is actually an asset. Research backs this up, with findings indicating that left-handers show no cognitive deficit, may recover better from certain brain injuries, and have a documented edge in combat sports.
