TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - High airline ticket prices often deter people from traveling, leading many to hunt for promotions. However, a simpler way to save money on flights is by choosing the right day to fly.

Dawn Morwood, a director at Cheap Deals Away and a seasoned travel expert, reveals that flying on midweek days can significantly cut costs. "Tuesday and Wednesday departures are almost always cheaper than weekend flights," she told the Daily Mail on Friday, June 20, 2025.

Morwood explains that most travelers prefer to maximize their vacation time by flying on weekends, which drives up prices, especially on Saturdays. Midweek days are less popular, making them more affordable. So, if your schedule is flexible, it's wise to compare flight prices across different days.

Booking in Advance Is Not Always Cheaper

While common wisdom suggests booking far in advance guarantees lower prices, Morwood cautions that this is not always the case. She has observed instances where airlines offer cheaper tickets closer to the departure date.

She recalled travelers booking flights over ten months ahead, only to see the same route drop by £200 (around Rp4.5 million) per person just weeks before departure.

"Airlines use dynamic pricing, which means they're constantly adjusting based on demand predictions," she said.

However, booking at the last minute also has its risks, potentially leading to skyrocketing prices and limited availability. Late bookings might also force travelers to compromise on accommodation quality.

According to Morwood, the ideal time to book short-haul international flights is between six and eight weeks before departure. For long-haul flights, it's best to book eight to twelve weeks in advance.
