TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian citizens (WNI) living abroad remain vulnerable to involvement in drug-related crimes. As of June 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recorded 153 Indonesians implicated in such cases.
"Consisting of 80 men and 73 women," said Judha Nugraha, Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when contacted on Monday, June 9, 2025.
Judha explained that the ministry, along with Indonesian representatives overseas, continues to provide legal assistance to those facing drug-related charges.
He emphasized that drug offenses are currently the most frequent legal issue encountered by Indonesian citizens overseas.
Previously, Inspector General Krishna Murti, Head of the International Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police (Kadiv Hubinter Polri), highlighted how promises of quick money often lure Indonesian citizens into drug trafficking rings.
He noted that some of those involved are migrant workers who become entangled in international drug networks.
"Indonesians are often offered roles as drug couriers, with payments ranging from Rp10 million to Rp100 million," said Krishna when contacted by Tempo on Monday, June 2, 2025. "Depending on the level of risk and the destination country," he added.
Krishna explained that economic hardship is a major factor behind these decisions. He also pointed out that limited education plays a significant role.
"Their lack of formal education makes them unable to analyze risks, including the risk of the death penalty," he said.
