TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon stated that 56 Indonesian nationals caught in an online scam and online gambling operation in Myawaddy, Myanmar, are currently undergoing the repatriation process to their homeland.
"They have started to be transferred today to Mae Sot, Thailand, as the initial stage of the repatriation process to Indonesia," said the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon in a written statement on Monday, December 8, 2025, as reported by Antara.
Upon arrival in Mae Sot, the Indonesian nationals who were detained from the online scam centers KK Park and Shwe Kokko are scheduled to fly to Indonesia on December 9 from Bangkok on a commercial flight.
Their transfer to Thailand marks the first phase of the repatriation process for approximately 300 Indonesian nationals under the supervision of Myanmar authorities following their involvement in online scam and online gambling operations since October. Prior to repatriation, they underwent data collection, identity verification, biometric recording, and health checks.
This transfer is the result of lengthy negotiations with Myanmar authorities and technical support from the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok for cross-border and flight processes, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon. The Myanmar government provided strict escort due to the dynamic and uncertain security situation in Myawaddy.
The Indonesian Embassy in Yangon continues to monitor the convoy movements and coordinate closely with the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok to ensure the smooth completion of the repatriation. The Embassy emphasized that the safety of Indonesian nationals remains the top priority and pledged to continue efforts to repatriate hundreds of others still under Myanmar authority supervision.
Caution Urged Against Illegal Job Offers
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recorded more than 10,000 online scam cases involving Indonesian nationals since 2020.
The Indonesian public is strongly urged to be cautious of enticing offers for work abroad that fall outside official procedures, as they risk becoming victims of fraud and exploitation.
Judha Nugraha, the Director for the Protection of Indonesian Nationals at Kemlu, clarified that while many cases involve victims of human trafficking, not all Indonesian nationals were unwilling participants. Some, he noted, voluntarily worked for these online scam syndicates.
