TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the things to be aware of during summer vacations is heat waves and extreme temperature changes. This can pose serious health risks.
Therefore, it is important to prepare some appropriate preventive measures, including preparing oneself and travel plans in the midst of hot weather. Navin Khosla, a pharmacist at a telehealth company, said the aim of summer vacations is to enjoy the sunlight, especially for tourists staying in countries that rarely get sunlight.
"But the temperatures experienced at some popular tourist destinations are very dangerous, and many people will never have faced temperatures like this before," said Navin, who is also a pharmacist at the online pharmacy Now Patient.
Quoted from Huffington Post, experts have revealed the common mistakes made by travelers during summer travel and tips to prevent them:
1. Lack of Hydration
During summer travel, it is important to keep the body hydrated. Avoid drinks that can cause dehydration, and bring a water bottle when engaging in outdoor activities. Justin Chapman, a travel expert at the company Go2Africa, said water alone may not be enough to cope with extreme temperatures due to heat waves. He suggests minerals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium to be able to absorb the proper hydration needed.
2. Avoiding indoor activities
Huw Owen, one of the founders of the holiday planning market TravelLocal, advises against spending too much time outdoors during heat waves. It is important to spend a few hours indoors or in shaded areas from time to time. Choose activities such as exploring museums, galleries, watching art performances, and enjoying lunch and coffee breaks in shady places.
3. Wear Comfortable Clothing
During summer, it is best to wear clothing that is cool and comfortable. You can also wear multiple layers of clothing that can be easily removed or added when the temperature changes.
"Use bright and natural fabrics such as cotton and linen in hot weather. These fabrics easily absorb sweat and will keep you cool, unlike synthetic fabrics that will trap heat, along with bacteria and odor, and make you feel hotter," said Chapman.
4. Use Sunscreen Properly
Sunscreen is very important for daily skin protection. Choose sunscreen with a high SPF, and reapply it at least every two hours. "Most people assume that the skin can only burn when the sun is very hot. However, the skin can burn even when the weather is cloudy or windy, so it is important to remember this," said Khosla.
5. Too Much Direct Sun Exposure
Khosla advises limiting time spent directly under the sun and consider seeking shade during the day. Take other steps to prevent overheating, such as using a fan or placing a wet towel on the head and neck.
6. Get Sufficient Sleep
Choose to do activities in the morning when the weather is not too hot. "It's better to do the same as many Europeans do and rearrange the day," said Owen. The right time can vary from one place to another, so do research to determine the hottest and coolest times at your destination and plan your sleep and activities based on that time.
7. Trying to do too much
There's no need to be disappointed if there isn't much time to visit tourist spots, especially ones that have been planned in advance, during a heat wave. Remember that your health is of primary importance.
8. Ignoring Body Signals
Dr. Gregory Katz, a heart expert at the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University, revealed a common mistake made when traveling is not being honest with one's body condition. It's no wonder that many ignore the signals sent by their bodies that something is wrong.
He advises paying attention to how you feel when traveling throughout the day, especially if you have a chronic condition. Always make sure to have the medicine you regularly consume with you.
