Activists from Gaza Flotilla Face Death Threats in Israel Prison

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two activists from the Gaza-bound aid flotilla—Thiago De Avila from Brazil and Saif Abu Keshek from Spain—have received death threats while imprisoned in Israel. This was revealed by an Israeli advocacy group for Palestinians on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The human rights center Adalah stated in a release cited by Anadolu that Avila and Abu Keshek have been subjected to mistreatment, psychological torture, and death threats or a 100-year prison term in Israeli prisons.

The Adalah statement comes after the visit by lawyers Hadeel Abu Saleh and Lubna Touma to the Shikma Prison in southern Israel, where the two activists are held.

The statement added that both activists have been on a sixth day of a hunger strike, consuming only water, in protest of their illegal abduction from international waters while participating in a humanitarian mission aimed at breaking the illegal blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip.

Avila told his lawyer that he had undergone "repeated interrogations, each lasting up to eight hours, during which the interrogators made explicit threats against him, saying he would either be killed or spend 100 years in prison."

The activists are being held "in an extremely cold facility and are blindfolded every time they are moved outside their cells, even during medical examinations."

"Adalah continues to demand their immediate and unconditional release and an end to these illegal procedures," the statement said.

Abu Keshek and Avila are among 175 activists from over 20 ships that were raided and intercepted last Thursday while en route to Gaza in an effort to oppose the Israeli blockade.

The activists were taken to Israel for interrogation and possible prosecution, according to a statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla coalition on Sunday.

The first ships of the flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, departed from Barcelona on April 12. Meanwhile, the main fleet set sail from the island of Sicily in Italy on April 26, with the aim of breaking the Gaza blockade that has been in place for years by Israel.

Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving 2.4 million Palestinian residents of the territory on the brink of starvation.

Israel launched a genocidal attack on Gaza in October 2023. This genocide claimed the lives of over 72,000 Palestinian citizens, injured more than 172,000 people, and caused massive destruction across the besieged region.
