TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and Iran have agreed to stop attacking each other "for now" and will meet on Tuesday, June 30, in Doha, Qatar's capital, to discuss the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by U.S. media outlet Axios on Sunday, as quoted by ANTARA.
Both sides will halt attacks "for now" and "ships can pass freely" as technical negotiations are scheduled to continue, a U.S. official was quoted as saying.
The talks, originally scheduled for Tuesday in Switzerland, were focused on Iran's nuclear program. However, escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz prompted the talks to be moved to Doha, shifting the focus to shipping security in the strategic waterway.
In talks in Switzerland a week ago, U.S. and Iranian delegations agreed to establish a hotline between the U.S. military and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to coordinate shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, as of Saturday, the hotline was still not operational, reports said.
The U.S. launched attacks on several Iranian targets on Friday and Saturday, citing "continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping" in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran then retaliated by attacking several U.S. military positions in the region.
