TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Oleh Soleh, a member of Commission I of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, has called on the government to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in Jalisco, Mexico, following a surge of violence after the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that 45 Indonesian citizens currently reside in the state.

“The situation in Jalisco is very concerning. The government must guarantee the safety of all Indonesian citizens. Their protection is a non-negotiable priority,” Oleh Soleh said in a written statement on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

Government Urged to Act

The Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) politician requested that the Indonesian Embassy in Mexico intensify communication with citizens in Jalisco, update data on their whereabouts, and ensure access to land-based communication channels.

He warned that the death of El Mencho has triggered retaliatory violence across multiple areas in Jalisco. “The cartel under El Mencho has unleashed brutality, creating a tense security environment and widespread fear,” he said.

Oleh emphasized that if the situation worsens, the government should be prepared to evacuate citizens to safer locations.

Oleh also urged Indonesian citizens in the region to remain calm, avoid high-risk areas, limit outdoor activities, and comply with local authorities and Embassy guidance. He assured that Commission I will continue monitoring the situation and push the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide optimal protection.

Escalation of Violence

The Mexican Army’s Special Forces killed El Mencho along with six CJNG members in a military operation in Tapalpa City on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

In response, cartel affiliates carried out retaliatory attacks, including arson, roadblocks, and assaults on law enforcement across dozens of cities. The violence has resulted in the deaths of 27 state officials.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the public to stay calm while security forces worked to restore order.

Embassy Confirms Indonesians Safe

Heni Hamidah, acting Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the Indonesian Embassy continues to monitor security conditions in Jalisco and maintain contact with all 45 Indonesians in the area.

According to the Embassy, the residents include clergy, professional massage therapists, business owners, and company employees.

“All Indonesian citizens are currently safe and following local government instructions to limit outdoor activities,” Heni told Antara on Tuesday.
