TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament will take place in the three host countries of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The world's biggest football event will kick off on Friday early morning, June 12, 2026, with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The match will be a repeat of the opening match of the 2010 World Cup when South Africa, as the host, faced Mexico. At that time, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw.
A total of 24 matches will be held throughout the first week of the tournament, from June 12 to June 18, 2026. The three host countries will immediately take the field in the first two days of the competition. After Mexico takes on South Africa, Canada will play its opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B. The match will take place at the Toronto Stadium, Toronto, on Saturday, June 13, at 02:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This will mark Bosnia and Herzegovina's return to the World Cup after making their debut in the 2014 edition.
On the same day, the United States will face Paraguay in a Group D match at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood. The match is scheduled to take place at 08:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
One of the matches expected to attract attention in the first week is the duel between Brazil and Morocco in Group C. Brazil, the five-time world champion, will face Morocco, which made an impressive appearance in the 2022 World Cup by reaching the semifinals. The match will take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday, June 14, at 05:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The first week will also be a historic moment for two debutant nations. Curacao will play their first match in the World Cup against the four-time world champion Germany on Monday, June 15, at 12:00 AM WIB at the Houston Stadium.
Another debutant, Cape Verde, will face Spain on the same day at 11:00 PM WIB at the Atlanta Stadium. Spain enters the tournament with the status of the 2024 European Cup champion and was the world champion in 2010.
Between these two matches, there will be an exciting game between the Netherlands and Japan in Group F. The match will take place at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington at 03:00 AM WIB. The two finalists of the 2022 World Cup will also start their journey on Wednesday, June 17. France will first face Senegal in Group I at 02:00 AM WIB at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Argentina will face Algeria in Group J at 08:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) at the Kansas City Stadium. Argentina still relies on their captain, Lionel Messi, who will lead the team in the effort to defend the title.
On the last day of the first week, Thursday, June 18, Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo will start their journey by facing the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group K at 12:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) at the Houston Stadium. Three hours later, attention will be focused on the big match of Group L which will bring together England and Croatia at the Dallas Stadium. The match will be an opportunity for England to avenge their 1-2 defeat to Croatia in the 2018 World Cup semifinals in Russia.
