TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Air India plane that crashed on June 12, 2025, was equipped with state-of-the-art technology and was claimed to be the safest. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff and hit a residential area near a medical school campus.

A total of 241 passengers died in the crash, with one survivor. The total death toll is 265, with 50 others sustaining injuries.

According to GlobalAir, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is a wide-body passenger jet. It has twin engines developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes and can accommodate 242 to 335 passengers in a three-class configuration.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is touted as the most fuel-efficient aircraft and a pioneer in using composite material as its primary construction material. It is 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the Boeing 767. The differences include electric flight systems, swept tips, and noise-reducing chevrons in the nacelle.

The Boeing 787, originally named 7E7, was officially renamed in January 2005. It was first launched on July 8, 2007, at the Boeing Everett Factory. Its development involved global suppliers for final assembly at Boeing's Everett and South Carolina facilities.

Despite being scheduled for operation in May 2008, the Boeing 787 project faced several delays.  It made its maiden flight on December 15, 2009, and completed flight tests in mid-2011.

This passenger aircraft has a length of 224 feet with a wingspan of 197 feet. It stands at a height of 55 feet 10 inches. The cabin is spacious, with a height of 19 feet 7 inches and a width of 18 feet, providing 2,404 cubic feet of space.

The aircraft has a crew of two pilots and can travel up to 6,430 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 490 knots. Its maximum speed reaches 515 knots, and it can fly at altitudes of up to 43,000 feet.

The Dreamliner requires a 9,400-foot runway for takeoff and a 5,700-foot runway for landing. Its maximum takeoff weight is 553,000 pounds, and its empty weight is 295,500 pounds. Its fuel tanks can hold up to 33,384 gallons.
