TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Another earthquake has struck the Aceh region today, Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the 5.2-magnitude earthquake at 02:02 p.m. local time.
The offshore quake occurred 54 kilometers northwest of Sinabang, the capital of Simeulue, at a depth of 26 kilometers. BMKG's modeling has confirmed that no tsunami threats arose from this earthquake.
According to BMKG, the tremor was felt at about III-IV MMI in Simeulue, and III MMI in South Aceh. The shaking was even weaker felt in Southwest Aceh.
An earthquake on the scale of III MMI means the shaking can be felt indoors, akin to trucks passing by. Meanwhile, the stronger IV MMI scale means it was felt by many indoors and caused doors and windows to rattle.
In a statement, the Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, pointed that the quake occurred at the megathrust zone. "It was shallow and caused by the Indo-Australian Plate subducting under the Eurasian Plate," he said.
4 Earthquakes Since Sumatra Floods
According to BMKG data, the recent earthquake is the fourth felt in Simeulue amidst the ongoing floods and landslides in parts of northern Sumatra, including Aceh. Previous earthquakes were recorded on December 4 (M4.3), November 28 (M3.1), and November 27 (M6.3).
The December 4 earthquake was offshore, 63 kilometers northwest of Sinabang, and its impact was felt at a level of II-III MMI in Sinabang. The November 28 earthquake was on land, 57 kilometers northwest of Sinabang, with a similar impact at a level of II-III MMI—only occurring in the early hours of the morning.
On November 27, exactly the day after Cyclone Senyar made landfall in Aceh, BMKG also recorded a 6.3 magnitude offshore earthquake, one kilometer south of Simeulue, Aceh. The epicenter was at a depth of 14 kilometers in the megathrust zone.
The earthquake was felt in Simeulue at a IV MMI intensity, and in other parts of Aceh and even North Sumatra at a weaker MMI scale.
