TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple claims to have found a way to enhance its AI model training without using or duplicating user data from the iPhone and Mac. In a blog post cited by The Verge on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, this technology giant revealed its plan to compare synthetic data with samples of email or recent messages from users. The data checked belongs only to users who participate in the Device Analytics program.
Apple's device will be able to determine which synthetic input is closest to the real sample. Only a kind of signal is sent to Apple to indicate which variant is most similar to the analyzed data.
Using this method, according to Apple, no personal data of users is accessed by the company. Apple even claims that the data never leaves the device. Apple then uses the most frequently chosen synthetic samples to improve its AI text results, such as email summaries.
The AI training scheme, which relies solely on synthetic data, is considered less effective by Mark Gurman, a technology journalist who often reviews Apple products. He mentioned that Apple had difficulty in launching its flagship feature, Apple Intelligence. Technical issues are also believed to have delayed the release of the latest Siri variant.
Nevertheless, Apple is trying to improve the situation by introducing its latest AI training system in the beta version of iOS and iPadOS 18.5. The new AI model training is also integrated into macOS 15.5.
Apple has been promoting the differential privacy method to safeguard user data privacy since the launch of iOS 10 in 2016. This method has been used to improve AI-based Genmoji features, and is now also applied in the training of Apple's latest AI model. By injecting random information into a broader dataset, Apple claims it can prevent the connection of the data with specific individuals. This method is used to protect consumer privacy.
