Apple's Base iPad Won't Include AI; Here's Why

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple has finally launched the latest series of the base iPad that has been on the market for more than two years. However, this basic model has received lower specifications compared to the Air, Pro, or Mini series, and is not supported by the AI feature, Apple Intelligence. This was revealed through a report by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), a consumer research agency in the United States.

As quoted from 9to5Mac, Apple has updated almost the entire iPad line in the past year. For example, the iPad Pro with M4 chip, a more advanced display, and the latest Magic Keyboard. There is also the iPad Mini, which has received the A17 Pro chip and an Apple Pencil Pro, and the iPad Air, which has its features and size.

In the CIRP report, there was no specification upgrade to the latest base iPad that some Apple loyalists have been waiting for. It was also the first iPad in the Apple ecosystem without AI capability.

In the 9to5Mac review, the base iPad has dominated the technology market for five years, compared to several Pro and Air series, which are still relatively new. The standard model held 15 percent of the total iPad sales in 2021, then increased to 21 percent in 2022. Its portion rose again to 30 percent in 2023, and steadily climbed to 38 percent in 2024.

The market trend has become Apple's main reason for keeping old features on the base iPad. The product is considered to have already met Apple consumers' needs.

Apple's move regarding the basic iPad model is also considered a lure for customers to switch to more advanced models, meaning the Pro, Mini, and Air series. "Apple would undoubtedly prefer customers splurge for more expensive models," as stated in the CIRP report, quoted on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
