TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, signed a Declaration of Intent (DoI) in the agricultural sector with the French government. The signing took place with Eric Lombard, France's Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.
This agreement was formalized during the second official meeting between the two countries at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The signing ceremony was witnessed by President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Prabowo stated that Macron was the first leader from the European Union to officially visit Indonesia during his presidency. This visit also happens to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and France. "We agree to move further through the Joint Vision Declaration towards the 100 Years of Indonesia-France in 2050," Prabowo said in a written statement.
This new agreement aims to support food security, food independence, and sustainable farming practices. The cooperation will involve sharing technology, improving the skills of people working in agriculture, developing livestock and animal health, and trading farm products and processed foods. Modernizing farm tools and infrastructure is also part of the deal.
The cooperation also includes developing farming methods that can withstand climate change using greenhouse technology, precise irrigation, and farming tools designed for farmers' needs. Both countries will also conduct joint research to create crop varieties that are resistant to drought and floods.
Moreover, collaboration in agricultural education and research, particularly in agroecology, is also part of this joint agenda.
Macron welcomed the strengthening of this partnership, especially its role in enhancing global supply chain resilience. He underscored the importance of cooperation in the food sector, including support for global food security programs.
In a press release from the Agriculture Ministry, Macron expressed his full support for a global cooperation agreement between the European Union and Indonesia aimed at social justice. This includes providing school meals for children, which he noted aligns with global food programs. "France's expertise in the food sector is ready to support Indonesia's ambitious plans in this sector," Macron affirmed.
