Apple Stockpiles iPhones and Macs to Brace for Trump's Tariffs

1 week ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reported to be hoarding its product inventory, such as iPhone and Mac, in anticipation of the new import tariffs policy from the United States President, Donald Trump. This measure taken in the Red and White Country is expected to mitigate the impact of price increases due to the ''Liberation Day'' tariffs, which have been in effect since April 9, 2025.

Citing GSM Arena, Apple is said to have been stockpiling iPhones, Macs, and other products over the past few months. The new tariffs announced by Trump may not apply to devices that have already been distributed in the U.S.

"Apple could theoretically hold off on raising iPhone prices until the iPhone 17 series in September," as noted by Mark Gurman, a technology journalist quoted by GSM Arena on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

Trump's new trade tariffs can burden countries where Apple products are assembled. China, the main assembly center for iPhones, is subject to a tariff of up to 54 percent, while India levied a 26 percent tariff. All goods from Vietnam also incur a 46 percent import duty upon arrival in the U.S.

Apple is reportedly prepared to absorb a small portion of these additional costs by limiting the profit margin from hardware devices. On average, Apple products have a markup-price increase of 45 percent, solely from the hardware side.

This tech giant is also renegotiating contracts with supply chain partners and manufacturers to obtain more efficient component prices and assembly services. Apple is also expanding its manufacturing network to new regions outside of Asia, with Brazil being mentioned as one of the countries that will become a new production base for Apple.

Apple last raised the price of its flagship iPhone in 2017. At that time, the iPhone X was priced starting from US$999. "Unless we see a huge turnaround on the geopolitical side of things, be prepared for a solid markup on the next generation of iPhones," Gurman said.
