Autopsy: Juliana Marins Suffered Blunt Force Trauma, Died Shortly After Rinjani Fall

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A forensic doctor from Bali Mandara Hospital (RSBM) has disclosed the autopsy findings of Juliana Marins, a 27-year-old Brazilian national who died after falling while hiking Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara last Saturday.

Forensic specialist Dr. Ida Bagus Putu Alit from Bali Mandara Hospital said that an examination of Juliana’s body revealed multiple injuries across her body, with prominent scraping abrasions suggesting she had hit blunt objects during her fall at Cemara Nunggal, a route leading to the summit of Mount Rinjani.

"The cause of death was due to blunt force trauma causing damage," Dr. Alit said in Denpasar on Friday, June 27, 2025.

He added that in addition to blunt trauma, they discovered fractures in the chest, spine, back, and thigh, with the most severe injury located on the spine. "It is from these broken bones that internal organ damage and bleeding occurred," he explained.

Dr. Alit noted that while the victim had a head injury, it did not result in brain herniation. The chest and abdominal areas experienced significant bleeding, with the heaviest bleeding found in the chest cavity. There were no signs of shriveled organs.

Based on the findings, Dr. Alit concluded that death occurred shortly after the injuries were sustained. "We did not find evidence that the death occurred a long time after the injuries," he said.

Toxicology results are still pending.

Responding to speculation that hypothermia might have caused the death, Dr. Alit said they could not confirm this due to the body being stored in a freezer, which had altered its condition.

"The cause of death was due to blunt force trauma causing bone fractures and internal organ damage. For now, that's it because we have to wait for the results of the toxicology examination," Alit concluded.

He also mentioned that the external examination of Juliana’s body was conducted the previous night at around 10:05 PM local time, followed by a full autopsy.
