TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Herbal tea has long been known as a healthful beverage that not only refreshes but also offers various benefits to the body. From ginger that helps relieve digestive disorders to chamomile, which is known for its ability to calm the mind and improve sleep quality, each type of herbal tea offers its own unique benefits.

It's no wonder that this beverage is becoming increasingly popular as a natural alternative to maintaining daily health.

Nutritionist Beth Czerwony, RD, explains that each type of tea has different benefits. "The key is to choose the tea that best suits your needs," she says.

Green Tea: Overall Health

Among the various types of tea, green tea holds the top position in terms of health benefits. "Green tea is the champion, like a versatile Swiss army knife in the world of tea," says nutritionist Czerwony.

As reported by Cleveland Clinic, various medical studies have shown that consuming green tea is associated with cancer prevention, heart protection, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, anti-inflammatory effects, and even weight loss assistance. These remarkable benefits stem from the presence of catechins, powerful antioxidants in tea leaves that function to protect body cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Ginger Tea: Healthy Digestion

If your stomach feels uncomfortable, a cup of ginger tea can be a natural remedy. Ginger has been used since ancient times to relieve nausea, including morning sickness in pregnant women.

Modern research also supports this benefit, showing that ginger can help speed up the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines, thus relieving digestive disorders and bloating. "Ginger can relax the intestines, making the stomach feel much more comfortable," explains Czerwony.

For those who are less fond of ginger, peppermint tea can be an alternative for addressing digestive problems, although it is more effective for lower intestinal disorders rather than acid reflux.

Herbal Tea: Natural Support for Lungs

For those who want to maintain lung health, herbal tea can be the right choice. The anti-inflammatory content in spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, or ginger is believed to help open narrowed respiratory passages, such as in asthma sufferers.

In addition, enjoying warm herbal tea can also relieve a stuffy nose by thinning mucus. "A cup of herbal tea is not only calming, but also helps to clear the respiratory passages," adds Czerwony.

Chamomile Tea: Improving Sleep Quality

According to The Independent, the compound apigenin in chamomile works as a mild sedative that makes the drinker feel more relaxed and easily sleepy.

"Chamomile essentially acts as a mild sedative. Sipping it really helps with sleep," explains Czerwony.

In addition to aiding sleep, chamomile also has other health benefits.

Its calming effect can lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart attacks. This aster-like plant is also rich in important minerals, including potassium and calcium. Potassium plays a role in maintaining nerve function, bone health, and regulating heart rate, while calcium is needed for bone and tooth strength as well as muscle and heart performance.

Research shows that the nutrients in chamomile have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and some types of cancer. Studies have also found that consuming chamomile tea is associated with a lower risk of death from heart disease, and potentially helps prevent diabetes.

Peppermint Tea: Best Choice When Feeling Under the Weather

The menthol content in peppermint tea is known to effectively alleviate cold symptoms. "This tea can really boost the immune system," says nutritionist Beth Czerwony as quoted from Healthline.

In addition to providing a refreshing effect, peppermint tea is also beneficial for relaxing a sore throat, opening up blocked airways, and even helping to reduce fever. When consumed regularly, this herbal tea even has antibacterial and antiviral properties that support the body's immunity.

As another alternative when the body is feeling run down, echinacea, hibiscus, and elderberry teas can also be tried to maintain health.
