BMKG: Rain and Haze Expected in Several Major Indonesian Cities Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that several major cities in Indonesia will experience rain and be shrouded in haze on Friday, August 28.

BMKG forecaster Ranika Dwi, in a weather update broadcast monitored from Jakarta, said that people in several areas need to be aware of atmospheric dynamics that trigger rain and impaired visibility.

"Be aware of the potential for moderate rain in Nabire, as well as light rain in Medan, Jambi, Bengkulu, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke," she said, as quoted by ANTARA.

He explained that the potential for rain cloud growth is influenced by the formation of wind slowing (convergence) and wind meeting (confluence) areas that stretch from the western to eastern regions of Indonesia, including the Malacca Strait, the North Natuna Sea, the Makassar Strait, and the Pacific Ocean north of Papua.

BMKG also highlighted the potential for haze to appear over the Bandar Lampung, Pontianak, and Manokwari areas. Meanwhile, the hazy air phenomenon is predicted to occur in Pekanbaru, Padang, Palembang, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, and Ternate.

Other areas such as Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkal Pinang, Samarinda, most of Java Island, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon, and Sorong are expected to be predominantly sunny with clouds to thick clouds.
