TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded a total of 1,713 natural disasters in various regions of Indonesia this year, as of June 23, 2025. BNPB Head Suharyanto said most of the incidents occurred in West Java, with 243 events. This is followed by 199 incidents in East Java and 162 incidents in Central Java.

"We must not be complacent," said Suharyanto during the 3rd National Jamboree of Muhammadiyah Aisyiyah Volunteers in Tawangmangu, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, on Thursday, June 26, 2025, cited from Antara.

During his visit to Central Java, Suharyanto mentioned the numerous disasters that struck the Kudus, Sayung, and Demak regions during the first half of this year. "But the Central Java Government has yet to sound the alarm to BNPB. The Governor can handle it," he said.

According to BNPB's records, out of the 1,713 disaster incidents, 29 percent were wet hydrometeorological disasters, 7 percent were dry hydrometeorological disasters, and 1 percent were geological volcanic incidents.

Over the past four years, the annual number of disasters has been fluctuating. "But it has never been less than 3,500 disasters. On average, there are 20-25 disasters per day," said Suharyanto.

Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi admitted that his region is prone to disasters, especially those related to water. This province is often hit by floods, both in the central part of the island and near the coastal areas. "We can find any kind of disaster here," he said.

According to data from the Central Java Disaster Management Agency Operations Control Center for the period of January 1 to May 31, 2025, there were a total of 152 disaster incidents. Of this total, there were 86 floods, 17 landslides, 42 extreme weather events, six residential fires, and one forest fire.

Luthfi mentioned that his region is on alert for potential new disasters, such as drought, tidal floods, high waves, tornadoes, and several others through the end of the year.
