BPS Announces 1.65% Inflation in March; Driven by Electricity, Fuel Costs

1 week ago 8

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that year-on-year inflation for March 2025 was 1.03 percent. Meanwhile, monthly inflation for March reached 1.65 percent, up from 0.48 percent in February.

The expenditure group contributing to inflation was driven by the Housing, Water, Electricity, and Household Fuel category, which rose by 8.45 percent and contributed 1.18 percentage points to inflation.

"March 2025 inflation was higher than the previous month and March 2024," said M. Habibullah, BPS Deputy for Production Statistics, during an online briefing on Tuesday, April 8.

By expenditure type, inflation was driven by the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco group, contributing 0.37 percentage points, followed by Clothing and Footwear (0.02 points), Housing, Water, Electricity, and Household Fuel (1.18 points), Household Furnishings (0 points), and Health (0.01 points). "The dominant commodity driving inflation in this [housing] group was electricity tariffs," he said.

In addition, other commodities contributing to March’s inflation included shallots (0.11 percentage points), chili peppers (0.06 points), gold jewelry (0.05 points), and broiler chicken (0.03 points).

Historically, he said, in the last four years shallots and broiler chicken have always experienced inflation during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. However, there have been certain periods where it did not occur. "The exceptions were in March 2023 for shallots and May 2022 for broiler chicken," he said.

BPS also stated that the national Farmers’ Terms of Trade (NTP) reached 123.72 in March 2025, up by 0.22 percent from the previous month.

He said the NTP increase was driven by a 1.51 percent rise in the Price Index Received by Farmers (It), which outpaced the 1.29 percent increase in the Price Index Paid by Farmers (Ib). This was also influenced by NTP gains in three agricultural subsectors: Horticultural Crops (3.89 percent), People’s Plantation Crops (0.09 percent), and Livestock (0.46 percent).
